"14 Nebraska counties oppose conservation projects funded by trust"

(LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR) The Lincoln Journal Star reports, "Elected officials from more than a dozen counties have asked the Nebraska Environmental Trust to take the unusual step of revoking grants it has tentatively awarded for wildlife conservation. Commissioners and supervisors from 14 counties have sent letters opposing the use of trust funds for land acquisition and perpetual easements. They argue permanently setting aside property for wildlife diminishes county tax bases and prevents the land from being used for agriculture. The trust's 14-member board of directors will meet Thursday to give final approval to the 2010 grant list, which was approved in February. Removing grants from the list would require a vote of at least eight members, said Mark Brohman, executive director of the trust. The five grants opposed by the counties total nearly $750,000 in value. Two involve easements and acquisition."
