(NORTH PLATTE TELEGRAPH) The North Platte Telegraph reports, "Proposed changes in the Middle Republican Natural Resources District's integrated management plan have many irrigators speaking out in protest. At a public hearing in Curtis on Tuesday night, members of the MRNRD board heard testimony from state and federal agencies, local political subdivisions and landowners who are upset over a plan that would require some irrigators to turn off their pumps during the so called 'compact call years,' or dry years.
That's an option the MRNRD plans never to use, said Dan Smith, general manager.
The 'rapid response' plan to shut down wells would keep the NRD in compliance with the Republican River Compact, Smith said, adding 'But we don't like it.'"
