"FEMA Defends New Flood Map"

(YANKTON PRESS & DAKOTAN) The Yankton Press & Dakotan reports, "Amidst criticism from local residents about new floodplain maps, representatives of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are defending the purpose of the documents and the methods by which they are created.

Many property owners along the James River in eastern Yankton County expressed their concerns at a Yankton County Commission meeting this week about the impending expansion of the floodplain. Those with federally-backed mortgages who now find themselves within its boundaries will have to purchase flood insurance. Additionally, many of the residents argued that their property has never flooded and probably never will."
