"NRD holds hearings for changes to groundwater rules and regulations"

(OMAHA WORLD HERALD) The Omaha World Herald reports, "With groundwater being a hot topic across the state and region, the Upper Niobrara White Natural Resource District (UNWNRD) held two hearings Thursday explaining proposed changes to groundwater management rules and regulations and giving the public a chance to voice their opinions.

A large group comprised of agricultural industry professionals and members of the public, attended the first hearing at the Hemingford American Legion Hall. The Hemingford area, which lies in UNWNRD's Subarea IV (Box Butte Area), is at the heart of significant projected groundwater declines, if pumping continues at the current rate.

Static water levels in the wells measured by UNWNRD in the Box Butte Area have declined significantly over the last 20 years. At last measurement, the water level was at 14.65-feet below the 1990 measurement and there is an estimated 70-foot decline since the 1940's."
