"Reservoirs Remain Above Normal"

(YANKTON PRESS & DAKOTAN) The Yankton Press & Dakotan reports "The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says heavy runoff from rain and mountain snow melt is keeping water levels in the Missouri River’s upstream reservoirs above normal this summer.

The corps’ long-term plan is to evacuate flood water out of Gavins Point Dam in Yankton, but it will maintain releases at the current level of 34,000 cubic feet per second until conditions improve downstream, said Jody Farhat, chief of the corps’ water management office in Omaha, Neb.

“It will take clear until December to get most of that water out, and even over the winter we’ll have a little bit higher than normal releases,” Farhat said Friday. “Our goal is to have all of the water evacuated by the first of March next year, which is what we consider to be the start of the run-off season.”
